Advantages and disadvantages of copy/paste concepts with AGVs and AMRs

Published on 05.01.2024

In logistics, copy/paste concepts are often used to transfer proven logistics processes, route optimization, warehouse management systems or supply chain strategies from one location to another. This is typically done to increase efficiency and minimize costs by reusing successful practices and patterns.

Advantages and disadvantages of copy/paste concepts

The general advantages and disadvantages of copy/paste concepts only apply to a limited extent in new solutions with mobile robots such as AGVs and AMRs. In general, copy/paste concepts are known to deliver cost and time savings after careful planning. In addition, replicating proven methods is interesting if you want to quickly roll out concepts on a large scale. Processes that have already been tested can therefore be implemented without a long testing phase. In addition, a certain level of process reliability can be achieved through the standardization (consistency) of processes with copy/paste.

In addition to the advantages just mentioned, copy/paste concepts also have some disadvantages. These concepts are often accused of lacking adaptability. Likewise, errors and inadequacies in sample processes are “copied” when they are rolled out again. The individuality of a process (requirement) that may be required can also suffer from the copy/paste concept. If a copy/paste concept is copied for too long without being revised, the ability to innovate and thus efficiency can suffer. For example, if there are more innovative options on the market for designing a process, these are not taken into account when simply copying.

Challenges with AGVs and AMRs

Due to the dynamic market of mobile robots, ordinary copy/paste concepts age faster these days and need to be adapted more often. The following factors play an important role:

  • Greater flexibility of mobile robot systems: Due to the high (and ever-increasing) degree of flexibility of various AGVs, copy/paste concepts must be adapted. These robotic systems are able to deal with changing environments, which makes them flexible in use. Rigid copy/paste concepts severely limit the flexibility of the devices, meaning that the full potential of these new systems cannot be exploited.
  • Technological development of AGVs: The rapid and dynamic development in the area of AGV and AMR solutions requires an iterative adaptation of copy/paste concepts. Continuous testing of new technologies and devices is becoming increasingly important for logistics planners.
  • New skills and possibilities: New devices from innovative manufacturers solve increasingly specific problems faster and more efficiently than their predecessors. This means that certain use cases are solved more effectively. However, the technological evaluation of new technologies without comprehensive know-how is time-consuming and cumbersome.

The copy/paste concepts of the future

Copy/paste concepts have a long tradition in logistics. Whether copy/paste concepts continue to be a profitable tool for you depends on many factors. Your corporate philosophy plays a central role. Some companies prefer to rely on proven patterns. Other companies, on the other hand, are open to innovations and want to test and implement new technologies as long as industry-specific requirements allow. These factors are:

  • Deep market insights for optimal solutions: Use external resources to stay informed about the current state of the market. Consulting services such as those from WAKU Consulting support you in selecting the optimal robot solutions. Thanks to WAKU Consulting's market intelligence, you always receive an up-to-date overview of all systems on the market.
  • Quick contact with manufacturers and partners: Stay in touch with the manufacturers. Developments in the field of mobile robotics are rapid. Thanks to the direct connection to manufacturers and partners, you always stay informed about the latest developments. WAKU Consulting offers you the optimal market access.
  • Iterative planning processes with the latest technologies: In the past, copy/paste concepts were often only adapted after several years. In the future, these planning processes will be revised more quickly. The main reason for this is the rapid development in the mobile robot market.
  • Use the power of data: Unlike before, mobile robots make it possible to obtain much more precise process insights. If you plan a concept with one or even several manufacturers, it is business-critical to measure process metrics and react adequately to anomalies. Using tools like the WAKU Platform, you are able to completely measure the process before converting it into a copy/paste concept.
